Greetings to everyone I have an HP Pavilion DV5-1199ek (bought in November 2008) with Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bits SP1, few days ago, due to a stubborn start error, I recovered the OS as it was 4 years ago, I connected to internet and from the HP website (dowload page of my laptop model), I installed a new version of HP Advisor and HP Update as well as installed HP Support Assistant utility (which wasn't on my system before the recovery) and I installed a last version of the BIOS (from HP website as well). Also, with the Windows Update software, I installed about 120 updates (dated between 2008 and 2012). Finally, Windows Update asked me to download and install Windows Vista Service pack 2 (actually, I was waiting for this).
Well, here is the issue: I've read at HP support website that before installing Win Vista SP2, all the installed drivers should be up-to-date and working correctly. I used an online freeware (DriverAgent )to check all my laptop drivers, and I found that I have 13 old drivers that have to be updated.
I returned to HP Support website , where I found that there are only three drivers updates available among the 13 (Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN, Realtek RTL8168C and Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad), I downloaded the packages and installed them. I have to mention that the 'HP Drivers Scan option' on the website didn't work for me even after using three different browsers, also the HP Support assistant I've installed earlier didn't ask me to update anything after the system scan. The install went fine, but only two drivers were marked as Up-to-date drivers by DriverAgent software (Realtek RTL8168C and Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad), I've done some researches on the web and I've found that the my PC cards manufactures like Intel and Nvidia offer newer driver versions than those of HP website and even some ones that HP didn't put to dowload (e.g. JMB38X drivers). So, what should I do then?
I read that replacing OEM drivers is quite risky, is it relevant for all drivers or just some of them? What should we do if HP didn't support us with all needed and updated drivers? Here are the 13 drivers including the two that were updated. The first given date is the release date of the current driver, the second one is the realse date of a/the newer/newest driver): Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN 2009.02.09 - 2010.10.18 Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) -OK 2008.07.29 - 2008.08.06 NVIDIA HDMI Audio 2008.03.22 - 2008.08.06 (HID) - user USB (no more details) 2006.06.21 -? Replacing the Intel chipset and wireless drivers with updated drivers you find at Intel is not a problem. Feel free to do that. I do not recommend using something like driver Agent. That is riskier than you think it is. Beware of so-called registry cleaners as well. I recommend that you do the driver updates manually or use the HP Support Assistant to get the versions available on the HP support portal for your notebook.
Make a system restore point before you install Vista SP2. That will give you a plan 'B' if the update goes south.
You will be able to recover to the system restore point via Safe Mode if needed. Best regards, erico. Hi and thanks for answering erico, well, so for Intel it's ok, what about the other manufacturers (Nvidia and JMicron)? Concerning ' HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor' driver, HP Portal didn't provide my Notebook model with an update?
Where can I get it then? I used DriverAgent as my Windows System information didn't give me enough details about my drivers and the 'HP Drivers Scan option' of the Portal didn't work for me as I said before. If you know a safer Driver scan soft, I'd appreciate to let me know it. Thanks for the advice about the restore point.;) best regards, Pelikan. The following is just the SD card reader slot driver. JMB38X MS Host Controller 2008.03.31 - 2008.08.07 JMB38X SD Host Controller 2008.03.31 - 2008.08.07 JMB38X SD/MMC Host Controller 2008.03.31 - 2008.08.07 JMB38X xD Host Cont roller 2008.03.31 - 2008.08.07 The NVIDIA HDMI driver update is not such an issue. The best way to find driver updates and install them is manually.
I don't use programs like Driver Agent simply because I do not trust them not to dink my operating system. Letting programs other than those that came with the operating system browse through your operating system's registry is just not such a great idea. The ' HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor' driver will be fine left as it is.
